Buying a Golf Bag for Someone Else? Here’s Your Guide
Posted by Dallas Golf on 21 Nov 2023
The holidays are fast approaching, and if you have a golfer in your life, there are plenty of great gifts you can get them.
Clubs and shaft combos are a bit personal, but there are push carts, rangefinders, launch monitors, gloves, tees, golf balls, and other quality golf equipment that can make great gifts.
We also offer a wide range of golf bags for sale from top brands like Mizuno, Sun Mountain, Titleist, Callaway, and others.
Buying for someone else can be a bit daunting, but fortunately, if you can answer the questions in this guide, you can probably make a great choice that a special someone will love.
Questions You Need to Answer Before Perusing Golf Bags for Sale
Before you pick out a golf bag from our collection to make for a gift, try to probe the recipient (or other friends or family) to find the answers to these questions so you can make sure the bag you pick fits their game.
How Many Clubs Do They Carry?
This is a critical question that you need to answer before you pick out a golf bag for someone on your Christmas list.
Players that follow the ways of the professionals will carry as many as 14 clubs - but some may carry fewer. Pry a little to see if you can find out what clubs the intended recipient carries so you can customize the gift.
At the same time, a golf bag with a 14-way top is a safe bet, as no one’s going to realistically be carrying more than that.
Do They Walk the Course or Play from a Cart?
This is another critical question. If you buy a stand bag for a cart golfer, it might not have the space he or she needs; conversely, if you get a cart bag for a player that walks the course, it won’t be well designed for his or her style of play, and might even be too heavy to comfortably carry.
It goes like this: your intended recipient either walks the course or plays from a cart. If he or she walks the course, a lightweight golf stand bag (also known as a carry bag) that’s easy to lift and carry will be an ideal option.
Conversely, if he or she plays from a cart, a roomier golf cart bag with straps and forward-facing pockets will make a more thoughtful, and more appropriate gift.
But you have to find out first!
If you can’t figure out the question or the person does a little bit of both, a hybrid bag may be a better option.
Where in the Country Do They Play?
This is not a critical question but it’s still worth knowing the answer, so you can account for the weather. Players in the northwest, northeast, and south will likely play in a lot of wet weather during the spring and summer.
Players in the southwest might be used to much drier weather and clearer skies.
Many golf bags for sale are made with fabrics and quality materials that feature a DWR, or “durable water repellent” coating, but not all do. Also, most come with matching rain flies.
These details are not critical but can help you pick out an appropriate golf bag as a gift.
Do They Travel a Lot?
Some players live in states like Oregon, Wisconsin, Texas, Florida, and California, that are brimming with world-class golf courses. Others don’t and may have to travel more or less to pursue their passion for the sport.
For those that travel cross-country to get to their preferred destinations, a travel golf bag might be the best gift. It would certainly be a thoughtful one.
The great thing about a travel bag is that you don’t need to worry about details like how many clubs it’ll hold, at least for the most part. This is because most travel bags are designed to entirely encase a cart bag or a stand bag and protect it during travel.
Do They Bring Food on the Course?
Just a small consideration, but worth looking into. There are some golf bags that are made with specialized cooler pockets that can keep food and refreshments like drinks either warm or cool on the course, depending.
This little feature might have a lot of value to some golfers, so throw it into your checklist for a new golf bag if you can.
What Gear Do They Carry?
You’ll also want to know what this golfer brings on the course, and some might be more gear-heavy than others.
At minimum, make sure the golf bag you’re looking at has a rangefinder pocket and a pocket for valuables, plus at least two other pockets for spare tees, shag balls, and notebooks and pencils.
If you know this golfer travels light, you can get away with fewer pockets, otherwise, err on the side of caution and go with one that has lots of extra space.
Do They Have a Favorite NFL Team?
This one’s optional, but it’s worth pointing out that Wilson produces both carry and stand bags officially licensed by the NFL.and decorated with premium embroidered logos.
These make a great choice for die-hard fans. Get this, their favorite player’s jersey, and a pair of branded gloves and you can make a whole package!
