Choosing a Fujikura Ventus Shaft by Swing Speed

Posted by Dallas Golf on 12 Nov 2024

                 Fujikura’s Ventus

You may have noticed that Fujikura’s Ventus line is available in three main colors, which are the Fujikura Ventus Red, Blue and Black.

All of these shafts are strengthened by VeloCore Technology, a multi-material bias core that stabilizes the shaft wall and helps prevent ovaling and other forms of deformation, even when the shaft is under a heavy load, or transition.

Yet, each of the different shaft profiles offers up something different. There are many ways to go about getting fitted for a shaft, but across the board, one of the most important is swing speed, which is closely correlated to swing tempo.

If you’re here looking for a Fujikura Ventus shaft that will perform well for you, and you want to shop according to your swing speed, here’s how to go about choosing one that will work for you.

Swing Speeds Up to 90 MPH: Fujikura Ventus Red

The Fujikura Ventus Red is available in stiffness ratings from regular to extra stiff and ranges in weight from 59 to 94.5 grams. The Red features a stiff tip, a firm midsection and an ultra-stiff handle section.

However, all Fujikura Ventus Red shafts produce mid to high launch profiles (except the Ventus Red 8 and 9, which produce mid launch profiles) and all of them produce medium spin.

The mid-launch profile is a bonus for players with slower swing speeds - anywhere up to 90 MPH, but on the lower end of that, will probably be well-suited to a Ventus in the Red lineup.

In addition to the mid to mid-high launch profiles, the Ventus Red produces medium spin characteristics, the most of any shaft in the Ventus lineup.

Now here’s the thing about spin. Spin can impart greater carry distance by generating a little bit of lift, which is naturally going to be received well by players with slightly slower swing speeds.

The tradeoff is that with greater spin generally comes more shot dispersion. Bargaining for a little more dispersion might be worth it if you need to take the risk to go the distance, but if you can avoid spin, that’s something most golfers would prefer.

And that’s why the Red generally plays nicest with players with slower swing speeds and fluid, more metered swing tempos. If you swing really hard or fast, you might just come up with a little more dispersion than you wanted.

Add to that the fact that you probably could have done better with a Ventus Blue or Black, and it’s time to move up to an alternative.

Swing Speeds 90 to 110 MPH: Fujikura Ventus Blue or Blackfvs

                        Fujikura’s Ventus

The Fujikura Ventus Blue is available in stiffness ratings from regular to tour-spec extra stiff, and ranges in weight from 58 to 94 grams. It has an ultra-stiff tip, a stiff midsection, and a firm handle section.

The blue offers the most variety in the way of launch and spin characteristics. On one end, the Blue 5 in R2 has a low-mid kick point and produces medium spin and mid-high launch.

All the rest of the Ventus Blue Shafts produce low spin, and most in the middle of the spectrum produce medium launch profiles. On the other end, select Ventus 7, 8 and 9 shafts produce not only low spin but mid-low launches.

Since the Blue produces less spin and launch than the red (pretty much across the board) it is a great shaft for players with swing speeds that range from 90 MPH to 110 MPH. Because there is so much variety in shaft profile, there’s a Fujikura Ventus Blue out there for pretty much any swing tempo, whether metered or fairly aggressive.

With all of this being said, the Ventus Blue will, in general, perform best for players with slightly higher swing speeds, simply because it leans less on launch and spin to generate distance, and doesn’t produce too much dispersion.

Moreover, if you have a slightly slower swing speed but need stability, you can choose one of the more flexible Blue shafts; if you have a faster swing speed and tempo, one of the Ventus Blue 7, 8 or 9 shafts will probably do well by you.

Of course, if you are on the higher end of the swing speed here, a Fujikura Ventus Black will probably work best for you.

Swing Speeds Greater Than 110 MPH: Fujikura Ventus Black

Now let’s talk about the most specialized Fujikura Ventus shaft of them all, the Fujikura Ventus shaft. With ultra-stiff handle and tip sections mated to stiff midsections, the Ventus Black ranges in weight from 59.5 to 93 grams and in stiffness from stiff to extra-stiff.

All Fujikura Ventus Black shafts feature a high kickpoint and produce low launch and spin profiles. These are the ultimate low-low shafts from the Ventus lineup.

They rely very little on launch height and spin characteristics to generate lift and produce distance, and lean only one the raw power of the golfer. Therefore, players with the fastest, most aggressive swing speeds will probably greatly appreciate what the Ventus Black can offer.

Extremely stable, consistent, and reliable, the Fujikura Ventus produces long, straight, penetrating drives for players with the most aggressive tempos. Go ahead, swing a Ventus Black as hard as you want - it will come up asking for more.

All in all, if you have a very fast swing speed (or perhaps a slightly slower swing but a very strong, aggressive tempo) a Ventus Black is a safe bet. Just don’t expect the shaft to do the work for you - that’s all on you.

Not sure which of these Fujikura Ventus shafts is for you? Truth is, there’s probably a Ventus Blue that works for your abilities, unless you have either a very slow or a very fast swing speed, in which case either a Red or Black will likely work better, respectively.

But working with a fitter is the only sure-fire way to be positive you’re getting a shaft that will work for you. Contact our professionals to learn more and we will help you choose a Ventus that works for you.
