How to Choose between Golf Travel Bags for Sale to Get One that Meets Your Needs

Posted by Dallas Golf on 12 Oct 2021

Golf travel bags for sale are made to a totally different standard from cart bags and stand bags. Despite the fact that they are equally useful in their own right, the main purpose of a golf travel bag is to protect your clubs and gear during transit and not to make it easier for you to actually carry the equipment around. You would never actually take a travel bag out on the course. Cart bags and stand bags are for that.

But for serious golfers who travel the country, or even the world, in search of new athletic challenges, a golf travel bag is a real necessity. No serious golfer would ever hear the words “rental clubs” without offering a scoff in return. If you’re serious enough about traveling and golfing, you might as well be serious about using your own gear. Golfers pay hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars for clubs and fitting - why would they ever dream of using other gear when they’re on the road.

Of course, golf equipment can also be rather fragile, which is exactly why you need a good golf travel bag to protect all of yours when you take it on the road.

Tip 1: Consider the size and capacity of the bag

Honestly, this is probably the most important feature of any golf travel bag for sale, regardless of what else it offers. If a travel bag isn’t large enough to fit all of the contents of your stand bag or cart bag, it’s not even worth getting because you’ll have to partially unpack your regular bag to make it all work.

However, here’s a pro tip - measure your stand bag or cart bag, and then just buy a golf travel bag that’s big enough to fit the whole thing inside. That’s actually how most travel bags are designed anyway - they fit over and around your cart bag or stand bag so you don’t need to do any shifting, shuffling, or re-packing. Choose a golf travel bag that is big enough to fit your other entire golf bag inside and it’ll solve some headaches down the line. Some travel bags will fit your entire stand bag and then have additional room or pockets for additional items like your golf shoes.

Tip 2: Weight doesn’t matter as much here

While most golf travel bags for sale are not really that heavy (plenty of them hover around 10 pounds or so) you shouldn’t be overly concerned with weight because you won’t ever need to transport a bag like this out on the course. Protection is much more important here than weight; the only purpose of a travel bag is to get all of your equipment to or from the car, plane, or train and then to your final destination, and you’ll actually carry the bag for very little of that.

You might be looking for a sub-two or sub-three pound stand bag, but the weight shouldn’t impress you in a travel bag. If anything, the heavier the bag, the more protective it is likely to be.

Tip 3: Hard or soft shell travel bags?

If you’re traveling on your own, in your own car, or in the car of a friend, then you will probably do just fine with a soft-sided travel bag. Many of them are highly protective anyway, and since you’ll have total control over how you load it and where you shouldn’t be too concerned about going above and beyond to offer protection to your golf gear.

However, if your bag’s going to be changing hands a few times, or you’ll be checking it on a plane as luggage (or through some other form of public transportation) you might want to consider a hard-sided travel bag that will protect your golf accessories and equipment from careless handling.

Tip 4: How will you transport it?

While you won’t be carrying around a golf travel bag for long periods of time, presumably, it’s still nice to have features that make transportation as easy as possible. Look for easy lift straps or handles that make picking the bag up easier. Some travel bags (especially hard-bodied ones) have line skate wheels and pivoting tow handles that make transport easier, especially through terminals.

Tip 5: Evaluate the other features of gear protection

Many golf travel bags have heavily padded sides and interiors that are designed to keep your golf clubs and other equipment safe. Some golf travel bags even have interior straps that keep any of your gear from moving around or migrating during travel. Consider how you’ll be traveling and choose a golf bag that offers the necessary safety features.

Tip 6: Are there any extras you need?

How much does color matter to you? Are you looking for a golf bag for traveling that has room for extra accessories? Perhaps you need one that’s extra-large, in order to fit your entire, loaded cart bag.

Consider any additional features you’d like to have before you purchase one. Some cart bags also serve as hybrids; they’re very lightweight and have removable padded heads that can fit over the tops of your clubs in order to protect them when you’re on the road.

Once you’ve checked off a list of all the features you need, you can choose a travel bag that will hopefully meet all of them.
