Is A.I. The Answer? Callaway Golf Thinks So.
Posted by Austin Chen on 11 Jan 2019
Every golf company is looking for more speed off the tee-box. Callaway is no different. However, the Callaway Epic Flash went in a uniquely different route to try to increase ball speeds. Callaway Golf seeked out the help of Artifical Intelligence. Yes, the A.I. that every one is afraid of that will take over the world one day. This is the 1st known instance of using A.I. in the golf club industry. Combined with Machine Learning, Callaway Golf was able to create over 15,000 virtual prototypes. Machine Learning is a field of computer science that uses statistical techniques to give computer systems the ability to "learn " with data without being explicity programmed. By comparison, without AI, a traditional driver design process may only have 8 to 10 prototypes. Callaway says that the A.I. allowed them to do what would have taken a normal iterating computer decades to produce with regular computing power. In the end, the result is what Callaway calls the Flash Face.

What is Flash Face?
Flash Face is forged from a special titanium that's then heat-treated for two hours to create a face which has a low-modulus measurement. This allows the face to offer enough flexibility for delivering ball speeds while retaining strength to handle the impact of a driver swing. The shape of the face has a unique, internal mapping which consists of dozens of subtle ripples flowing from heel to toe. Though the size, height and configuration of the ripples appears random, they in fact work together cohesively to elevate COR in the face’s centre region. This goes against the norm which has the thickest part of the driver face as the sweet spot and progressively thins out from there. The result? An average ball speed gain of 3 mph for their Tour players.
