Keeping Your Golf Bags in Good Condition: A Brief [but Helpful] Guide
Posted by Dallas Golf on 13 May 2022
Don’t spend hundreds of dollars on a golf bag just to abuse it and have it fall apart before its time. Fortunately, by observing a few basic best practices, you can extend the lifespan of your gear - including your golf bags.
Now, we’re not just a premier supplier of golf bags for men and women. We’re also your source for news, pro tips, and information - so sit back and soak up some of this insider info on how to keep your golf bags in fighting shape.
1.Empty it out (and let it dry if it’s wet)
First off, if you had your golf bag out in the rain, get it somewhere cool and dry to dry off thoroughly before you start cleaning it.
If it’s wet and full of your gear, empty your gear so it doesn’t get water damaged, and place your gear somewhere safe.
2.Vacuum the inside
Once your bag is nice and dry, get out a vacuum. It could be a small, portable car vac or you can use the attachments on your home vac - doesn’t matter to us.
Open all of the pockets and go to town. Get down at the bottom of the pockets where the seams are and at the bottom of the main compartment of the bag. Trust us, there are some bits of dried grass and leaves in there and probably some dried mud and loose sand.
Vacuum it all out and then double-check to make sure you got all of the loose debris.
3.Wipe down the inside and outside
Next, using a warm, wet rag, wipe down the inside and outside of your golf bag. Get all of the exterior panels but don’t forget to double down on the inside of the pockets.
You can use more water with synthetic materials like nylon but don’t use a soaking wet bag on cotton canvas or leather, as these are prone to water damage.
Scrub out all of the stains and marks you can get out with just water and the rag.
4.Spot treat stains
Next, if you have any stubborn stains, it’s time to break out the big guns. Add a little dish soap (keyword - a little!) and gently scrub any grass or mud stains that remain on the outside of the bag.
We’re cautious about using more powerful detergents or spot cleaners, but you can try them if you want and they’re rated as safe for use with the material your golf bag is made from.
5.Let it dry (somewhere slowly, out of the sun!)
Now that your golf bag is nice and clean, it’s time to put it back somewhere that’s cool and dry and out of direct sun.
Here’s the thing - you want your bag to dry off, but you want to do so slowly. Natural materials like canvas and leather are prone to water damage if they dry too quickly so you want them to dry out thoroughly, but slowly.
Even materials like nylon can be damaged from repeated wet/dry cycles or from drying out too quickly, so be conscientious about this.
6.Fill it back up
Once you’ve dried off your golf bag, you can go ahead and fill it back up. Just make sure it’s completely dry on the inside and not damp as water can damage your gear.
In addition, now’s a good time to figure out if there’s anything in your bag that you don’t need anymore - some garbage from last season, perhaps, so use this opportunity to do a little spring cleaning, if you like.
7.Use a protectant spray if necessary
Many quality golf bags feature not only plenty of room and storage options but are also made with premium materials that are treated to resist water.
After a while, sometimes the water-resistant finish wears off. There are special waterproofing protectants and finishes you can buy and apply to your golf bags in order to restore their water resistance.
Also, if you have an old school bag made from a natural material like leather, instead of applying a waterproofing agent, apply a leather conditioner. This will help protect the leather from weathering, water damage, and cracking and will help keep it supple.
8.Get on the course!
That’s all there is to keeping your golf bag clean - now you can get back on the course where you should have been!
