Posted by Dallas Golf on 14 May 2024
You ever heard of a Sunday bag, or a Sunday golf bag?
No? Then buckle up. We’re going to cover the Sunday bag, and its use case, in this short post. Let’s get to it.
What Is a Sunday Golf Bag?
Simply put, a Sunday golf bag is a golf bag that is lighter than your “everyday” golf bag, and contains only the essentials that you’ll need on the course. Sunday bags are also known as minimalist bags and carry bags.
The fundamental difference between a Sunday bag and a regular bag is that the Sunday bag is lighter and more lightly equipped. You probably won’t even want to equip your Sunday bag with your full cohort of clubs.
But before we can get to that, let’s take a look at some great Sun Mountain golf stand bags for the purpose.
What’s the Best Sun Mountain Golf Stand Bag for the Job?
There are lots of lightweight Sun Mountain Golf bags that would make great Sunday bags. Some of these are:
- Sun Mountain 2.5+: This Sun Mountain golf stand bag is lightweight and minimal by nature. The 2.5+ by Sun Mountain is a winner in this category and shockingly weighs under three pounds empty - a true featherweight by any metric. That being the case, the 2.5+ is no slouch, and has a 9” top along with six pockets for bringing along your essential gear and is supported by lightweight, strong carbon fiber legs. It also comes with a matching rain hood and is optimized for comfort, with a high-density padded foam shoulder strap to support you during long days on the course.
- Sun Mountain Eco-Lite: The Eco-Lite is a little bit bigger than the 2.5+, weighing just over 4 pounds, but even with that extra pound it’s still a bantamweight. It also has a 9” top, comes with a matching rain hood, has 5 pockets for your golfing essentials, and is comfortable to carry thanks to its EZ-Lite Dual Strap System.
- Sun Mountain VX: The heaviest Sun Mountain golf stand bag on this list, the VX weighs 5 lbs empty, but you get a lot of value for that extra pound over the Eco-Lite. The VX is made from sailcloth, an extremely durable material, and it also packs an anodized carabiner and climbing rope handles. The VX also offers a 9” top and 7 pockets, including a specialized beverage pocket, 2 velour lined valuables pockets, and a full-length gear pocket.
But Sun Mountain golf stand bags are not the only ones that might make good Sunday golf bags. Let’s take a look at a few other top brands, just as backups.
Other Contenders?
In addition to the Sun Mountain golf stand bags called out here, the following would also make great Sunday bags:
- TaylorMade Flex-Tech Lite: Two things really distinguish the TaylorMade Flex-Tech Lite; its weight and another surprise feature. Tipping the scales at under 4 pounds, this is one of the lightest golf stand bags on this list, making it a natural as a Sunday bag. But the other great thing about this bag is that it has a cart strap pass-through, which technically makes it a hybrid, and perfect whether you’re playing from a cart or walking the course.
- Titleist Players 4: The Titleist Players 4 is a great stand bag no matter how you split it, one of the lightest, yet most capacious, on this whole list. The Players 4 is under 4 pounds, yet it somehow has 7 pockets, including a fully waterproof pocket to keep your valuables safe and dry.
So, now that we have a whole bunch of great picks for a Sunday bag, what are you going to take along, and what are you going to leave behind?
Alright, What Do I Need in My Sunday Golf Bag?
Previously, we published a post on the essentials that everyone needs in a golf bag, and then some.
That list is great for your everyday bag. This one is going to be a little more minimalistic. With that said, here are a few things to pack into your Sunday bag:
- Your essential clubs: You can carry 14, but do you really need them? Give yourself a challenge and shave it down. Try to figure out which clubs you really need to be proficient on the course.
- Golf balls and tees: You can’t play the sport without these!
- Golf glove:
- Towel: You still have to keep your clubs clean, even if you only carry a few of them
You’ll also want food and water, and of course bring along your valuables (most of the bags we highlighted here have room for them.
Other essentials you might also not want to part with include:
- A pen or pencil and paper
- A ball marker
- Some basic first aid supplies, along with chapstick or vaseline, sunscreen, and bug repellent
However, you can probably skip pretty much everything else, unless you’re definitely sure you need it. One thing you can definitely skip is the change of clothes or, if you usually carry them, a change of shoes. If you carry anything, maybe make it a change of socks. You can probably leave the extra clothes and even the umbrella off the list. Do you really want to be out there if the weather doesn’t cooperate, anyway. This is just your Sunday bag, after all.
Normally, we’d say having a change is a good thing. But this is a Sunday bag, right? Maybe, if you get soaked on the course because a storm brewed up, you should just call it. There will be other Sundays!
