Vokey Wedges: Key Terms Explained

Bob Vokey’s Wedges are recognized as some of the best in the game of golf at the present time. Precision machined from exemplary materials and the product of years of research and testing, they offer peerless performance, and, most importantly, are among the most versatile wedges in the sport of golf.

This is due in part to the fact that there are many different Vokey wedge grinds available, not just to make them suitable to a wide cohort of golfers, but to make them versatile based solely on application.

With that said, here are some of the central terms (that you need to understand what you’re looking at in golf wedges) broken down.

What Is Golf Wedge Bounce?

Put as simply as possible, wedge bounce is the angle created by the leading edge of the wedge and the lowest point of the sole or the trailing edge. A wedge is said to have high bounce when the angle is larger, and low bounce when the angle is shallower.

The presence of this angle forces the wedge to skip, or “bounce” (hence the name) out of the turf or sand when it strikes it.

High bounces wedges are designed for lighter, softer turf and sand, as the steep angle helps prevent the sole of the wedge from digging in too deeply on contact. The angle helps it deflect back up and out of the divot. They’re perfect for approaching the ball with a steep attack angle, and they also generate a lot of spin, giving golfers precise control over their short game.

On the other side, lower bounce golf wedges are designed for harder, denser, more compacted turf and earth. They produce smaller divots and clean ball contact, which is beneficial over harder earth and packed sand. However, a golfer must be careful when using a low bounce wedge in these conditions (despite the fact that they are designed for them) because low bounce wedges can bind and stick if they strike the turf too low.

What Is Grind?

Now let’s take a second to talk about wedge grind. The grind refers to how much material has been “ground” away from the sole of the wedge (hence the name) influencing how it will interact with the turf.

The grind profile enables the manufacturer to impact bounce very precisely, giving more complete control over shot shape and profile. The wedge grind also can be engineered to offer greater forgiveness.

So let’s take a closer look at the main Vokey Wedge grinds.

About Vokey Wedge Grinds

There are 6 main Vokey Wedge grind profiles, as detailed here:

  • T Grind: The T Grind presents the narrowest sole in the entire SM10 wedge lineup, and is designed for sharp, precise shot making. It is a very low-brounce grind, which makes it one of the most versatile Vokey Wedges that can be used over a variety of ground conditions.
  • F Grind: The F Grind is an all-purpose grind that results in (generally) medium bounce. This makes it a very versatile wedge, and one that is commonly selected for use in sand. It also benefits players that hit the ball consistently with a square face. It is one of the more traditional grinds in the Vokey lineup.
  • M Grind: The M Grind is another wedge with a versatile grind that allows for multi-purpose use. It really shines in the hands of players that have the skills to rotate the club face from open to closed in order to produce different shot shapes. It’s also good for players with shallow and sweeping swings.
  • S Grind: Vokey’s S Grind is a narrow grind profile that produces relatively little bounce. As a result, this grind profile is suitable for neutral and firmer ground conditions as it produces a faster feel through the turf. This unique profile enables players to control the loft of the swing.
  • D Grind: The D Grind produces high measured bounce, which results in good forgiveness with compatible turf. It’s also a good grind profile for players that like to adopt a steep angle of attack through multiple clubface positions at impact.
  • K Grind: Lastly, we have the K Grind, which produces the highest bounce in the Vokey wedge lineup, making it the ultimate bunker club. It sports a wide full sole with high bounce, making it ideal for sand and soft turf - and on top of that, it’s considerably forgiving given the right conditions, too.
